As I posted previously, I had taken about a 5-month break because my game had totally unraveled and it just was not fun at all. The poor play was all self-inflicted. A few weeks ago I hit some balls with OK results and then some balls a few days later and the dreaded skanks appeared again. Something is seriously out of whack and what used to be so natural was now pretty bad. I didn't hit any balls for about a week and prior to going to the range last week, I did Monte's little drill at home with a Nerf football. Went to the range and realized I was yanking the club way inside with very quick wrist break. Got the club more on plane and hit the ball decent, but it just doesn't "feel" like "my" swing.
I hit the range again yesterday and getting the club more on plane I am hitting it pretty good until I go to hitting some 3/4 lob wedges and then the ball starts going sideways again as I feel just totally out of whack. I just am not releasing the club naturally. This hold on, block skank. Then, right out of the blue, I got a "feel". I used to feel like I was releasing from the top and felt like I was throwing a ball with my back arm. I stood there with my wedge in my right hand and would take it back and then just throw it down with the right arm. I start throwing 60-yard darts at the flag. Cool. I grab a 6-iron and just freaking hammer it. Then, even I, Block it Right Mike, with the driver start hammering these smoking draws straight as can be.
It is taking a little while but the "feel' is starting to come back. Not easy eliminating all of the garbage out the golf brain.

Mike, I know the feeling of the shanks. I've been battling them off and on for the last year and there is NOTHING more frustrating. I had to go to Miami last week so I hadn't hit balls for a week until this past weekend. I started out pitching and was shanking everything again. All of the sudden I felt like I had never swung a club before. I was horrified. Like you, I started rehearsing throwing the little orange basketball from Monte's drill. I'm out there on the practice green doing this and people are looking at me like I'm nuts, oh well, it's not the first wont be the last time I got the feeling of using the right side of my upper back/shoulder on my downswing, something I've never done or felt before. Being a lefty golfing righty, I'm left side dominant and I 'think' I have a tendency to pull myself into & hump the ball even on little chips and pitches. The results are as horrendous as it sounds Anyway, I start hitting perfect pitch shots and then continued on doing the same thing with full shots throughout the bag with great results. I still felt like I was rotating everything together but the transition felt like pushing the back of my right shoulder and it seemed like even though I was throwing from the top, on full shots, my lower body automatically engaged to support the throw.

Bob,
I too am a natural lefty, playing golf righty.
Got out for a little pitching and chipping practice for about 20 minutes yesterday and the "right-handed throw" was working well. For over two years I have had this tendency to lock down the hands and wrists and just flat out rip some hosel rockets.
It is getting there.

Interesting. I wonder if you and I had latched on to something from our previous teaching that's not good for lefties playing righty? Too much of a coincidence to think otherwise...
These damn hosel rockets are the one thing that's really holding me back. Just when I think I'm on the right track, that crap shows up and just totally zaps me of any confidence I had. I start changing stuff... It sucks. Hopefully, what we're doing will carry me through my practise session today. I have league matches tomorrow, Thursday and a tournament on Saturday...

I hope you can tame the "laterals" Bob. I felt helpless watching you so I can only imagine how frustrating it was for you.

Warning: log post ahead It's always the simple stuff... I had another good range session last night and another Aha moment; I didn't realize this initially but using the method described above was naturally allowing me to keep my head steady without thinking about it. I was using my body too much before on both the backswing and downswing, atleast using in it a way that was causing me to move my head around too much. I went through the ultimate tinker's session and changed how I took the club back and through in every way I could think of. As long as I kept a steady head, I had good results. The one issue with 'trying' to maintain a steady head is it adds some tension and takes some of the dynamicism out of the swing so I then tinkered the other way and worked on rotating my body in such a way that my head stayed steady pretty much on it's own without me having to try and keep it steady. Once I found that, being able to swing freely without my head bobbing up, down, back & forth. I had exceptional results.

So far so good... Played really well in my league match yesterday. I know I'm working on too many things; Knees more bent at address although that is already natural, Shoulder turn 90* to spine. The biggest help for me has been using the shoulders to take the club down the shaft line laying just outside the ball drill because that also helps with the other fault I have of letting my right arm get pinned to my side. And then the transition we talk about above but it's all starting to feel more natural and require less thought. So much so that I no kidding hit 2 drives yesterday over 290 (measured on GPS) and have added at least 10 yards on average. Even better is that I'm hitting a bunch of GIR's and the scores are coming down I figure 290 for me is like 325 or more for Monte. I'm an old, short dude. 5'6" & 150lbs ;D Mike, how're things going for you?
