I've never been "fitted" for clubs and am curious what it might tell me about the type of equipment I should play, especially since I'm 6'3". I've always played standard gear, sometimes stiffer shafts.
I've called a couple places in LA. A GolfTec shop will do a fitting for $175 for either irons or Driver, or both for $350. The Roger Dunn on Bundy will do it for free, even if I don't buy anything. I'm sure there are other shops that are somewhere in between.
Is club fitting beneficial? Assuming someone who charges me $175 is better than someone who does it for free, is it worth the money? I'm interested to hear anyone's experiences or opinions.

and I use standard length clubs. My experience with club fitting is half of them are great and half of them are morons. So go with a fitter who did right by someone you know.

I've had both experiences. My first fitting was by my <in hindsight crappy> instructor who fit me for clubs that was 2 inches over standard, and I'm only 6' tall! I only found out that was bad when I got fitted by the titleist guy going around in their fitting truck (I got new clubs when I broke 90). Turns out I could just use the standard everything clubs. I also paid for a driver fitting and it turns out the driver fit best for me was off the rack!
My follow-up question is...how often should one change/get re-fitted for new clubs? I'm hoping I can break 80 soon and I was hoping to get new clubs then.
Thanks!
